The first wave of agri-food innovation, such as vertical farming and alternative proteins, has highlighted both the potential and the limitations of translating agriculture into constrained environments. A new approach is now gaining momentum: plant cell culture. In this keynote, Alex Shandrovsky examines why this technology is particularly relevant for arid regions like the GCC, where traditional agriculture faces structural challenges. Drawing on Ayana Bio’s work in biomanufacturing plant bioactives, the session explores how closed-loop production systems can decouple ingredient supply from geography, offering a more resilient and controllable pathway to nutrition, wellness, and ingredient security in desert and climate-stressed regions.
