Calls for more demand-side R&D to back plant-protein sector
ood Frontiers’ Megan Redmond and Hannah Anderson discussed the state of Australia’s plant-protein industry with Integra director Tom Reddecliffe during a recent webinar.
Australia’s plant-protein industry is calling for urgent demand-side investment to turn its pulse crop potential into value-added products. Integra Foods — a South Australia-based producer converting locally grown faba beans into protein isolates, flours and starches — says the country needs collaborative trials between local growers, ingredient-processors and food manufacturers. The call comes alongside Food Frontier’s new national report urging a dedicated national taskforce and coordinated R&D strategy to replace imported soy and pea-based proteins. Doing so could build a domestic plant-protein supply chain, support growers, local manufacturers and drive sustainable growth across regional Australia.
