The Union Minister for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Shri Narendra Singh Tomar, directed NAFED, the nodal organization, to actively promote the International Year of Millets (IYM) 2023 at a global level. Under his guidance, NAFED signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare to support millet-related initiatives.
As part of this collaboration, NAFED has begun providing marketing linkages to millet-focused startups, established Millet Corners in NAFED Bazaar retail stores, and installed Millet Vending Machines across Delhi-NCR. NAFED is also in the process of setting up a Millets Experience Centre at Delhi Haat, INA, aimed at promoting the nutritional value of millets and showcasing India’s cultural heritage through millet-based dishes.
The Minister emphasized that all Central Ministries, State Governments, and public and private food and beverage stakeholders should work together to make IYM-2023 a people’s movement, while positioning India as the Global Hub for Millets. He highlighted that India’s G20 Presidency (from December 2022) coincides with IYM-2023, providing a unique opportunity to showcase India’s strengths in food security and nutrition, with millets playing a key role.
Secretary, Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Shri Manoj Ahuja, stated that ministries and states have been requested to ensure visibility of IYM-2023 across all G20 events, including millet-based hampers, branding, cuisine, stalls, literature, and cultural elements. NAFED was entrusted with developing curated millet gift hampers, which were showcased at the G20 Employment Working Group Meeting in Jodhpur, reinforcing India’s commitment to millet promotion.
